Dancing Pumpkin Island
This ceramic sculpture was born during a residency in Jingdezhen, China—the ancient porcelain capital where clay and creativity have flowed for over a thousand years.
The Pumpkin
While exploring local markets in Jingdezhen, I discovered a pumpkin with the most extraordinary texture—ridges and curves that seemed almost architectural, organic yet deliberate. Its surface was mesmerizing, a natural sculpture in itself. I knew immediately it had to become a mould.
A Garden of Earthly Delights
Like all my work, this piece draws inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights—that fantastical painted world where creatures dance, nature takes impossible forms, and imagination knows no bounds. The pumpkin became an island, a stage for whimsy and wonder, adorned with hand-built legs and details that give it life and movement.
It's a sculpture that feels like it might get up and walk away, carrying its own little world on its back.
